…only got twenty dollars in my
pocket (Thrift Shop by Macklemore)! If you went thrift shopping you could get
perhaps about five to ten items for these twenty dollars. At H&M or Zara
maybe two. So why would anyone spend this money on one single shirt just
because it has a swoosh on it? What makes this shirt worth twenty dollars or
more? It is all about the brand!

You do not just buy a product. You
buy a whole lifestyle. Wearing Nike tells the people around you that you are
young and athletic. It also shows that you have enough money to afford such an
expensive shirt. Maybe there even are people who only respect you because you
wear or use brand-name products.
I think it is fascinating how a company can make
you feel such a great need to buy its products just by putting its logo on it. But
it takes a lot of work to get there. A brand has to build up a reputation
before people start spending money on its products. This is where good
advertising is needed. Nike uses for example sponsorship agreements with famous
athletes as well as the famous slogan “Just do it”. Nike’s ads are very
powerful and encourage the viewer to do sports. So the next time you think
about buying sports apparel or shoes you remember the feeling of “getting
started” when you saw the Nike ad and you want to become part of this
community.
Brands make the world easier because
you feel that you can trust them regarding their quality. You instinctively
know that a Nike shoe is better for your marathon training than a no-name
product. The same applies to the selection of the right cereal (Kellogg’s),
Laptop (Apple) or car (Mercedes). The right brand just shows you the way.
